چکیده

In this paper, the C-conforming finite element method is analyzed for a class of nonlinear fourth-order hyperbolic partial differential equation. Some a priori bounds are derived using Lyapunov functional, and existence, uniqueness and regularity for the weak solutions are proved. Optimal error estimates are derived for both semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes. Keywords—Nonlinear fourth-order hyperbolic equation; Lyapunov functional; Existence, uniqueness and regularity; Conforming finite element method; Optimal error estimates.

Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing Preprint Seria C0 Interior Penalty Discontinuous Galerkin approximation of a sixth order Cahn-Hilliard equation modeling microemulsification processes

Microemulsions can be modeled by an initial-boundary value problem for a sixth order Cahn-Hilliard equation. Introducing the chemical potential as a dual variable, a Ciarlet-Raviart type mixed formulation yields a system consisting of a linear second order evolutionary equation and a nonlinear fourth order equation. The spatial discretization is done by a C0 Interior Penalty Discontinuous Galer...

Numerical Conservation Properties of H(div)-Conforming Least-Squares Finite Element Methods for the Burgers Equation

Least-squares finite element methods (LSFEMs) for the inviscid Burgers equation are studied. The scalar nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law is reformulated by introducing the flux vector, or the associated flux potential, explicitly as additional dependent variables. This reformulation highlights the smoothness of the flux vector for weak solutions, namely f(u) ∈ H(div,Ω). The standard least-...

Finite Element Methods for a Bi-wave Equation Modeling D-wave Superconductors

In this paper we develop two conforming finite element methods for a fourth order bi-wave equation arising as a simplified Ginzburg-Landau-type model for d-wave superconductors in absence of applied magnetic field. Unlike the biharmonic operator ∆2, the bi-wave operator 2 is not an elliptic operator, so the energy space for the bi-wave equation is much larger than the energy space for the bihar...

On Approximate Stationary Radial Solutions for a Class of Boundary Value Problems Arising in Epitaxial Growth Theory

In this paper, we consider a non-self-adjoint, singular, nonlinear fourth order boundary value problem which arises in the theory of epitaxial growth. It is possible to reduce the fourth order equation to a singular boundary value problem of second order given by w''-1/r w'=w^2/(2r^2 )+1/2 λ r^2. The problem depends on the parameter λ and admits multiple solutions. Therefore, it is difficult to...
